New: Starting today, I'm gonna be a Guest Lecturer at the University of Texas / San Antonio - UTSA

Today, I'm starting on a new adventure.

I'm going to be a Guest Lecturer at the University of Texas @ San Antonio - UTSA for the Spring Semester. My first class is today, so I'm really stoked about doing this.

I'll be joining Dr. Cory Hallam, who is leading the course entitled, Starting the High Tech Firm.  Dr. Hallam is also the Assistant Vice President for Commercialization for the University.

I'll be posting course material over at SanAntonioStartups.com and will have links to the posts from here as well.

Thank you Cory for the opportunity to do this.

Stay tuned....

Should PR Own Social Media? (Alan thinks it should start with the CEO. Here's why)

I think PR should "own" Social Media.

Mind you, I've been doing PR for 25 years, so I have a bit of a bias here.

My reasoning for having PR "own" Social Media is simple: while I am all for conversation, being open, engagement, etc., the realities are that there still needs to be elements of message, communications strategy, and content development the same way we've been doing this for eons.

When PR owns social media, you then have a cohesive communications strategy that helps support business communications goals.

Each company will vary in their approach, as social media now encompasses roles such as tech and customer support.

Maybe "owning" isn't the right term here.

Perhaps bringing the mindset and discipline of overall marketing communications and how social media is impacting all phases of a company's internal and external touch points merits consideration - starting with a company's CEO.

In doing so, it could get a CEO's attention and set the tone for the company's next generation of how it communicates and interfaces with its publics.

This post in from the Journalists blog points in this direction, and expands upon my take on this.

What's yours?

Video: "Baby You Can Drive My Car" - Paul McCartney in Dallas

This was shot on my iPhone, so while not great quality, and very short, it does capture some of the essence of the concert

Here's What's Up with The Texas Israel Chamber of Commerce

We are extremely fortunate to be connected to two of the strongest business states in the world at this time; Texas & Israel! And as a Board member of the Texas-Israel Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to help promote this organization in any way I can.
ticoc with building backround

Here's the latest....

The opportunities are limitless and the Chamber is working hard at growing its network of high-quality professionals & entrepreneurs to increase business opportunities for its members and community.

We here in Texas are sourcing the best product in the world; Israeli innovation!  We are constantly privy to learning of "breakthrough technologies" coming out of Israel and these are occuring in a broader range of industries than ever before.  Texas is a strong entrepreneurial state as is Israel and the relationship is strengthening!

You're invited to join our Chamber and one of its dynamic committees in your area of interest and contribute to building this exciting organization for the benefit of all. You will read about our recently completed & very successful business mission to Israel below in "TiCoC News" as well as upcoming events and other interesting topics.

Next event is Wednesday, August 19th 7:00am-10:00am "Innovation in Manufacturing" at UTD featuring a powerful lineup of speakers. Please feel free to contact yavner@texasisrael.org at your convenience to learn more about how you can get involved.

The Chamber's cleantech committee invites over 85 people every month to participate in our monthly committee call. We are now planning a major event: "Texas-Israel Cleanovation"  on February 22, 2010 in Austin, featuring both Israeli and US companies, entrepreneurs, consultants, bankers, service providers, etc.  We also expect Dr. Eli Opper, Israel's Chief Scientist and UT graduate to speak! Please follow us on our blog & click "Cleanovation" at the top for event details.

TiCoC Israel Trip - June 2009 & ILSI-Biomed

The TiCoC brought a delegation of Texas business leaders to Israel and hosted a VIP Dinner reception featuring 80+ people at the Dan Tel Aviv Hotel.  The dinner included VIP speakers, CEO's, government officials, innovators, entrepreneurs, bankers, lawyers and more wherein we discussed the positive benefits of doing business in Texas and how the TiCoC can add value and facilitate business between Texas & Israel.  We would like to thank David Wiessman, Executive Chairman, Alon Israel Oil, and Avi Friedman, Senior Country Director, Continental Airlines for sponsoring.  We would also like to thank Mr. Eitan Yudilevich, Executive Director, BIRD Foundation, Tamar Guy, Executive Director Israel-America Chamber, & Mark Ellison, Vice Chancellor, Texas A&M for presenting at the dinner. Our Vice Chairman Terry Anderson did an excellent job organizing.

The Chamber also attended the ILSI BioMed conference which attracted over 3,000 people in the  life sciences, biotech, pharmaceutical & business development world. The TiCoC arranged targeted visits to companies and academic institutions.  The Chamber met the owners of Given Imaging, who make the now- famous PillCam, BioLine Rx an exciting drug development company BioJerusalem

ElronRainbow MedicalHadasit and many more.

Israel and Texas share a strong entrepreneurial spirit and both have outstanding university research, & Governments focused on funding innovation.  The Chamber's Life Sciences committee has established PHD's (in Israel & Texas) and business development professionals to help you connect.

Further along on the trip, we visited with senior executives around the country in multiple industries including cleantech, hi-tech & Life Sciences. Valuable relationships were established and deal flow has already increased!  The Chamber will advise our plans to attend ILSI-Biomed next year in June.

Karl Rove: ObamaCare in Trouble

Read Karl Rove's view here:  via online.wsj.com
My view:

I think his heart is in the right place, but our new, young President is clueless about healthcare.

I am self employed.

I pay my own way.

I have insurance, but with a $10,000.00 deductible.

I shop and negotiate when I visit a doctor. Make this a competitive marketplace and it will sort itself out. The more the government intervenes, the more expensive it will be. And trust me, I promise you that members of Congress will never have to go through the process that the other 300,000,000 may have to go through if his vision goes through. Our system is not perfect, but it's better than the rest of the world.
